PFAW Foundation Condemns U.S. Right-Wing Leaders’ Connection to Ugandan Anti-Gay Bill

WASHINGTON – People For the American Way Foundation is deeply saddened to learn of the reported passage of the infamous anti-gay bill in Uganda. The draconian bill would make so-called “aggravated homosexuality” punishable by life in prison.

A number of far-right leaders in the United States are connected to this bill. Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, called an older version of the bill an effort to “uphold moral conduct.” The anti-gay activism of Abiding Truth Ministries’ Scott Lively in Uganda has helped foment anti-gay sentiment there, and a lawsuit brought by gay rights group Sexual Minorities Uganda alleges that Lively’s activities in Uganda led to the torture and deaths of gay and lesbian Ugandans. Lively has explicitly come out in favor of a version of the bill that included life in prison as a punishment for homosexuality.

“American far-right groups have long embraced bigotry and discrimination when it comes to LGBT communities in this country. In recent years, they’ve also worked hard to export their hatred,” said People For the American Way Foundation President Michael Keegan. “Their help in facilitating a clear violation of human rights is abhorrent. These far-right U.S. leaders must take responsibility for the human suffering caused by their role in its development.”

The far-right’s work in Uganda is part of an ongoing effort by American anti-gay activists to spread their bigotry abroad, including support for suppressive anti-gay laws in Russia, Jamaica, and Peru. Right Wing Watch will continue to monitor and expose these efforts to export homophobia.

Religious Right Myths Never Die

Earlier this year, Senior Master Sgt. Phillip Monk became a cause célèbre for the Religious Right after he was supposedly relieved of duty for opposing gay marriage; so much so that his tale of victimization was even the focus of an entire panel at the annual Values Voter Summit.

The only problem was that his tale of anti-Christian persecution was false:

The Air Force has found unsubstantiated the claim of a senior master sergeant who said he was reassigned after making known his religious objections to same-sex marriage.

Senior Master Sgt. Phillip Monk, now assigned to the 59th Medical Wing, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, said he was relieved July 26 of his duties as first sergeant of the 326th Training Squadron and forced to take leave because he disagreed with his commanding officer’s position on gay marriage.

The investigation, initiated Aug. 15 by Col. Mark Camerer, 37th Training Wing commander at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, found the claim unsubstantiated. The investigation also concluded Monk made false official statements, but did not violate Articles 107 or 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

“The weight of the evidence shows that religion was never discussed between the two,” Camerer said in an Air Education and Training Command release.

“In the end, this is a case about command authority, good order and discipline, and civil rights — not religious freedoms,” he said.

Monk was not removed from his position, but rather moved, as scheduled, to another Lackland unit, an assignment he was notified of in April, the release says.

Like so many other right-wing myths, the fact that the central claim is entirely untrue does not in any way stop the Religious Right from repeating it endlessly, as demonstrated by the fact that the Family Research Council has produced a new video featuring Monk claiming that "his punishment was intended to have a chilling effect on service members throughout the military."

"I was the victim here," says the man that a military investigation found repeatedly made false statements about his supposed victimization:

Fischer: 'What We Need Is About A Hundred And Fifty Million Phil Robertsons'

It is no surprise that professional anti-gay bigot Bryan Fischer has come out in support of "Duck Dynasty's" Phil Robertson, defending the anti-gay comments that got Robertson suspended from the show.

In fact, on his broadcast yesterday, Fischer called upon conservative Christians all over the nation to follow Robertson's example and speak "biblical truth about sexuality and marriage" in "every circumstance, every situation, every conversation."

Saying that the entire controversy is rooted in the "spiritual warfare" that Satan is waging on humanity over the issue of homosexuality, Fischer declared that the only way to fight back is to "continue to speak the truth," which is why everyone ought to emulate Robertson every chance they get.

"What we need is about a hundred and fifty million Phil Robertsons out there," he said:

Fischer: Arrest Of Indian Diplomat Is 'Payback' For Recent Anti-Gay Ruling

On his radio broadcast yesterday, Bryan Fischer discussed the case Indian diplomat who was arrested last week on charges of visa fraud and underpaying her nanny, which Fischer is not buying at all since he knows that this diplomat was really arrested because President Obama is trying to pay India back for the recent Supreme Court ruling outlawing gay sex.

Fischer, a vocal supporter of the Indian law, said the arrest of the diplomat was nothing more than "payback" to the nation of India for the ruling.

"I mean, could you be any more obvious about retaliation or payback," Fischer said, before going on to blast Obama for naming openly gay athletes as part of the official presidential delegation to the Winter Olympics, saying it was an intentional "thumb in the eye" to Russia.

"It's just insulting":

Your Support Makes Our Work Possible

One question we are often receive from readers and followers on Twitter or Facebook is how do we find the right-wing insanity on a daily basis to find the content posted on this blog. And the simple answer is that it requires countless hours of reading right-wing websites and blogs and even more time listening to mind-numbing radio and television programs to uncover the excerpts that we post here.

And none of that could be done without the support from our parent organization, People For the American Way. It is through donations to PFAW that we have the time, staff, and resources to listen to radio broadcasts about how President Obama is a devil - maybe even the Antichrist himself - who has "spiritually sodomized" the nation.

It is donations that allow us to bring you important discoveries like the fact that women who use birth control have wombs filled with dead babies or that wildfires are the result of women wearing pants.

Donations make it possible for us to watch Religious Right gatherings where Rep. Michele Bachmann declares that 9/11 was God's judgment:

Donations fund our efforts to find clips like Rick Joyner warning that only martial law will be able to save America:

Donations give us the capacity to listen to David Barton every single day and highlight his views that "decent people" think homosexuality is "reprehensible and disgusting"or that AIDS is God's punishment for sin or that citizens have a right to own fighter jets or that abortion causes natural disasters:

Donations help us track Bryan Fischer as he warns that Michelle Obama is inviting demons into the White House and explains how such demons can be exorcised, which he understands first hand because he was once attacked by a demon:

Donations fuel our efforts to keep an eye on "Dr. Chaps" Gordon Klingenschmitt who urges Christians to load up on guns as there is a demonic spirit is oppressing this nation and forcing Christians to participate in sodomy, all because gay people have something "unhuman" inside of them:

We work hard every day to highlight just these sorts of radical views not simply because they are dangerous and bizarre, but because the people who hold them have ties to elected officials at every level of government and wield influence on the nation's public policy.

If you appreciate the unique content we provide and wish to support our on-going efforts, please consider making a donation to People For the American Way before the end of the year to ensure that we can continue our efforts in the year ahead.

Beck Offers 'Duck Dynasty' A Home At The Blaze, In The Name Of Diversity

Because Glenn Beck is a paragon of principles and consistency, it makes perfect sense that one day after blasting President Obama for not walking out arm-in-arm with gay athletes during the opening ceremony at the Winter Olympics to send a message to the world, he is now offering the Robertson family of "Duck Dynasty" fame a place on his network, vowing never to hinder their ability to spread their anti-gay views.

Beck suggests that all every member of the Robertson clan ought to just answer every question they are asked from now on by simply repeating the statements that got Phil Robertson suspended from the program and doing so until A&E cancels the show, at which point Beck's The Blaze will pick it up.

"We're not ashamed. We won't fold," Beck said. "We have people of diverse opinion here. There are people that are godly and atheist. There are people here that are liberal and very conservative. There are straight people, there are gay people. There are white people, there are black people. They all have an opinion and they're all welcome at The Blaze. Duck Dynasty, we would be proud to have you. May I suggest, make your stand. You will never have a better change and, quite honestly, you're our best shot as people. If we don't get people to wake up to the fact that this is fascism, that we are not allowed to have another opinion - if we don't get them to wake up now, they're never going to wake up, and you're our best shot. Diversity of thought":

Wildmon: The 'War On Christmas' Has Set America 'On The Road To More Serious Persecution' Of Christians

NC Committee Upholds Teaching of Challenged Allende Novel

After Isabel Allende’s internationally-renowned novel The House of the Spirits was challenged by a parent this October, PFAW Foundation wrote to members of the Watauga County, North Carolina Board of Education, urging them not to remove the book from the county’s high school curriculum. Now, following a sustained outcry at both the local and national level – including from Allende herself – a county appeal committee has unanimously voted to uphold the teaching of the book.

Defending Phil Robertson By Calling For Gays To Be Put To Death

It is remarkable how, for the Religious Right, the First Amendment seems to mean they are allowed to say anything they want without receiving any criticism or suffering any consequences, but that appears to be the belief of everyone who is rushing to Phil Robertson's defense.

Beck: Ted Cruz 'May Be Our Ronald Reagan'

Glenn Beck rips President Obama's Olympic delegation as "nursery school stuff" and wants him to walk out arm-in-arm with gay athletes, before hailing Sen. Ted Cruz as potentially the next Ronald Reagan.

Glenn Beck Blames Obama Administration For Lying Robot Telemarketer

Even though Beck's own "The Blaze" reported that these calls came from a company called Premier Health Plans Inc., and Beck acknowledged that the calls came from a "private health company," he somehow managed to blame the entire thing on the Obama administration.

Klingenschmitt: Gays 'Have Something Unhuman Inside Of Them'

"Dr. Chaps" Gordon Klingenschmitt responds to a ruling against anti-gay Colorado bakery owners by asserting that it is not "dehumanizing" to discriminate against gays because gay people "have something unhuman inside of them."

Glenn Beck Pays Attention To A School Shooting, For A Change

One of the most striking things about watching Glenn Beck day in and day out is the extent to which he is quite literally the embodiment of the very things that he rants about on his program.
