Cleveland, Ohio – Ohio members of People For the American Way Foundation’s African American Ministers Leadership Council urged Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted to drop his attempt to disenfranchise Ohio voters who cast provisional ballots. Three days after the election, tens of thousands of provisional ballots remain uncounted. Secretary Husted attempted last week to change the rules for counting provisional ballots, making it more likely that ballots would be invalidated, and the rule change is currently being considered by a federal judge.
“Voting is over and most of the races have been called, but this election won’t be completed until every vote is counted,” said Rev. Tony Minor of Cleveland, Ohio Coordinator of the African American Ministers Leadership Council. “Every single person who shows up to vote on Election Day should be confident that their vote will be counted and their voice will be heard. Secretary Husted is trying to throw up last-minute barriers in an effort to stop some of these votes from counting. That’s undemocratic and unacceptable.”
Yesterday, Husted reportedly floated the idea of dividing Ohio’s electoral votes by congressional district in the future, making it possible that the winner of the popular vote in Ohio would not receive the majority of the state’s electoral votes.
“Secretary Husted’s job is to help Ohioans vote and to guarantee that our votes count,” added Rev. Minor. “Instead, he’s fighting in court to suppress this year’s votes, and planning how to make Ohioans’ votes count less four years from now. Sec. Husted should know that every person who turned out to vote in Ohio on Tuesday is invested in our political process, and we will continue to fight for our voting rights.”
Self-proclaimed “prophets” Mike and Cindy Jacobs of Generals International continued to spew their predictions about terrorism, natural disasters and economic turmoil on their show God Knows. Jacobs—who previously alleged that she helped avert bombings—revealed that she along with other prophets were having dreams in 2011 about a looming terrorist attack, and explains that their visions were confirmed by the events in Benghazi.
Mike Jacobs contended that there were even more terrorist plots, but that they had been thwarted by “the prayer cover that has been placed over the United States by various prayer groups and individuals praying.”
While discussing the string of election night victories for marriage equality today, Tony Perkins declared that if the Supreme Court legalizes it Christian conservatives will never accept it because, like abortion, they know that "it's unnatural for two men to be married." If the Court strikes down the anti-gay marriage amendments passed by various states over overrules the will of the people, Perkins warned that it could lead to "revolution" and "just break this nation apart":
Televangelist Pat Robertson is stunned by the success of the erotic fiction book, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” asking 700 Club co-host Kristi Watts if she “sees anything in porn that attracts you” or just considers it “boring” like him. Robertson said he is shocked that “Fifty Shades of Grey” is so successful since its author is “a little housewifey-type that doesn’t look like some glamour queen.”
Today, Mike Huckabee appeared on the Focus on the Family radio program to share his thoughts on the election results where he provided a glimpse into the Religious Right's worldview when he explained that any time their agenda does not win at the polls, it is because Christians didn't vote:
I think there were a lot of Christian people who simply stayed home for reasons that I can't figure out. But I think every time we lose major elections or major issues like the same-sex marriage issue or the marijuana issue, it's because Christians just didn't show up and vote.
I lay the blame though at the feet of those who sit faithfully in church each Sunday, they probably heard their pastor talk about the importance of this election and how so much was on the line, and yet maybe because they just didn't want to bother with having to stand in line at an election polling place, they just didn't go vote. And we're going to pay dearly for that.
If I were Cardinal Dolan or any of the Catholic bishops or priests, I would certainly be very frustrated and discouraged and wonder why aren't they understanding that if they join a church and belong to it, why would they not respect its teachings as having validity. It's one thing to say "well, I can't agree with everything" although I'm not sure why you'd join a church if you dismiss it. But to be openly contemptuous of its teaching and doctrine, it's something I can't understand.
According to exit polls, 78% of the electorate identified themselves as Christian, but according to Huckabee, the fact that Mitt Romney lost can only be attributed to the fact that "Christians just didn't show up and vote."
This is perhaps the most concise illustration we have ever seen of the fact that the Religious Right is fundamentally incapable of comprehending that there are millions of people in this nation who consider themselves to be Christians but who do not share their extremist views or support their political agenda.
Today, Glenn Beck sought to make sense of the results of last night's election, beginning with a lengthy, tear-filled monologue about George Washington before getting down a business by rolling out hints about his plans to create an entire Blaze "ecosystem" that will be able to operate independently of the government and existing media structure because everything is about to go downhill ... so people need to start buying up farmland, pull their kids out of the public schools, and loading up on guns:
After weeks of insisting that the George Washington/Abraham Lincoln-like Mitt Romney would win a landslide victory in last night's presidential election because the Tea Party is just like the Founding Fathers and God would not allow America to fail and have to be destroyed, Glenn Beck and a gaggle of right-wing commentators and activists joined him last night for a live Election Night broadcast on his Blaze TV network.
For the first few hours, the mood was jovial and confident as Beck munched on ice cream to celebrate the breaking of his forty day fast and served up meals to others who did the same. But then, once the networks called the state of Pennsylvania for President Obama and started eliminating some of the other states that Romney supporters thought would propel his campaign to victory, the mood on set took a somber turn as everyone involved began to realize that all of their hopes and predictions were slowly being dashed.
And soon all discussion turned to the question of what went wrong, as the mystified participants tried to make sense of what they were seeing, leading Jerry Boykin to declare that the entire election was invalid because some members of the military supposedly were unable to vote and prompting Beck to speculate that America will not survive another decade if conservatives do not gain control over the nation's public education system.
But mostly Beck was just demoralized, saying that the result demonstrate that "the body of America is even sicker than I thought it was" and declaring that he no longer can say that he knows who Americans are:
Televangelist John Hagee is urging his church to pray for God to “pull down the corruption in our government and expose evil” in a sermon laced with criticisms of President Obama for purportedly declaring “war on religion.” Hagee said that abortion rights and marriage equality for gays and lesbians are demonic strongholds and part of the “demonic forces that are attacking our nation.” “Pull down the stronghold of abortion, pull down this concept that men can marry men and that’s blessed of God, that’s not blessed of God,” Hagee charged.
On today's broadcast, Bryan Fischer blasted New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for praising the Obama Administration's response to Hurricane Sandy and for refusing to campaign for Mitt Romney in the midst of the recovery. And if that wasn't bad enough, Fischer also criticized Christie for taking a strong stand in support of the state law that bans price-gouging on gasoline during an emergency, saying that not allowing sellers to charge whatever they want amounts to "socialism" and only serves as a disincentive to the production of more gasoline:
Newt Gingrich appeared on Steve Deace's radio program last evening to explain why Mitt Romney is going to win the election, which makes sense given Gingrich's steller record of making accurate election predictions.
During the discussion, Gingrich said that another Obama administration would be a "nightmare" because an "arrogant" and "divisive" Obama wants to make sure that "the government which is currently failing in Hurricane Sandy" will be delivering your healthcare:
I think that this is the most important election of our lifetime. Period. I think that four more years of Obama will be a nightmare. I don't expect him to change very much, I think that he'll feel vindicated if he's won. I mean, he's already so arrogant that he talks about using votes as a form of revenge. He's running a deliberately divisive campaign and I think that there's no evidence that he's learned anything.
The Left is opposed to teaching American history, is deeply offended by the idea of American exceptionalism, believes in dependency and food stamps, wants to centralize power in Washington. I remind people who are watching the mess in New York, and Staten Island, and New Jersey: the government which is currently failing in Hurricane Sandy is the government that Obama wants to deliver your healthcare. So I just think there are fundamentally antithetical views of reality.
Whether by reaching out to people of color, young people, women, or other key communities, People For the American Way Foundation has been on the ground all across the country these past few weeks getting out the vote.
The VESSELS project of the African American Ministers Leadership Council, which is committed to increasing civic participation in communities that have traditionally experienced disenfranchisement and discrimination, has organized GOTV events in more than thirty cities across the country. From Buffalo to Miami, Las Vegas to Baltimore, and many places in between, VESSELS have been organizing in their communities to get people to the polls. Ms. Ruby Bridges spoke at a rally in New Orleans, while Dr. Ralph Abernathy III took the stage in Cleveland. In other towns, volunteers have organized trips to the polls following Sunday worship services and GOTV concerts.
Youth organizers have also been working hard to turn out the vote. Despite the fact that nearly 85% of young people were not reached out to by either campaign, we know from our Young People For (YP4) Fellows that young people are busy organizing. They are centering their efforts around a campaign called ARRIVE WITH 5, because while every vote is powerful, they know that when they ARRIVE WITH 5 (or more!) friends to polls, the impact of the youth vote is magnified. At Pitzer College in California, YP4 Fellows are organizing an ARRIVE WITH 5 caravan to the polls – providing electric go-cart rides from their campus to the polling station. At Oberlin College in Ohio, student leaders are hosting voter information events, phone banks, and dorm storms. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, they sang to get out the vote. Local bands and a cappella groups performed everything from jazz to techno while attendees got excited about making their voices heard on Election Day. And these are just a few of the events YP4 Fellows organized this year, collectively reaching thousands of students across the nation.
People For the American Way Foundation was founded more than three decades ago with a vision of a vibrantly diverse democratic society in which all Americans are encouraged to participate in our nation’s civic and political life. The hard work of PFAWF’s Fellows, VESSELS, and other volunteers this election cycle have helped bring that vision to life in a very real way.
In our last post highlighting Glenn Beck's declaration that if Americans are "so dead inside" that they re-elect President Obama, then America will "have to be destroyed" because the nation has lost the ability to differentiate good from evil, Beck made a passing reference to a quote from Valerie Jarrett, President Obama's Senior Advisor.
It was this supposed quote from Jarrett that demonstrated, for Beck, the fundamentally evil nature of the entire Obama administration, and he had it read out repeatedly during the segment - here is the quote:
After we win this election, it’s our turn. Payback time. Everyone not with us is against us and they better be ready because we don’t forget. The ones who helped us will be rewarded, the ones who opposed us will get what they deserve. There is going to be hell to pay.
It was this quote that prompted Beck to proclaim that America was on the verge of reaping God's wrath ... but where did it come from? The quote is posted on all sorts of conservative websites and blogs, but they all eventually link back to a blog called The Ulsterman Report.
And where did "Ulsterman" get this quote? From an pseudonymous source he calls "Wall Street Insider" who claims to have received it from a source he supposedly has within the Obama campaign in Chicago:
Thought you would be very interested to hear of this. It appears this Jarrett creature is quite confident of a victory, and has every intention of making those who opposed her, and her boy, of paying dearly for their seeming crimes against them. As Election Day is nearly upon us, more and more are willing to speak outside the inner circle. Such is the case with this message received by me this morning from a source who has been working for us via Chicago for several months now. Their campaign appears increasingly confident, I assume, due to the now adoring media coverage of their boy’s little march with the commoners following this week’s storm. It has been a revolting display by some in our media has it not? Here then is the most recent report I received our Chicago source. I first passed it along to our mutual friend with no response, so now I pass it along to you in the hopes you deem it worthy to publish as its sharing will serve a related purpose with another I hope to secure a favor from in the very near future. And if you have any concerns regarding the source – don’t. They are being thoroughly protected despite their understandable trepidation. As you have been.
The "Wall Street Insider" then forwarded a message supposedly written by the mole inside the Obama campaign which contains the quote that so outraged Beck:
A rep from Jarrett office was in today. She gave us a finish line pep talk and then afterwards, heard her saying how Jarrett is very excited about a 2nd term agenda and a big part of that agenda is to punish everyone who opposed them during the first term and the campaign. Strange that everything was “Ms. Jarrett wants this, and Ms. Jarrett is looking forward to that”. You hardly heard Obama’s name mentioned by her which I guess reinforces what people are saying. Valerie Jarrett really is the power in the White House. I know that when her representative showed up it was like royalty was visiting. All the big dogs were lined up to meet her and acting real friendly and they gave us a heads up an hour before and told us we better “put on a good show” while she was here.
The part that really stuck out to me was when I overheard the rep say that Jarrett told them, “After we win this election, it’s our turn. Payback time. Everyone not with us is against us and they better be ready because we don’t forget. The ones who helped us will be rewarded, the ones who opposed us will get what they deserve. There is going to be hell to pay. Congress won’t be a problem for us this time. No election to worry about after this is over and we have two judges ready to go.” She was talking directly to about three of them. Sr. staff. And she wasn’t trying to be quiet about it at all. And they were all listening and shaking their heads and smiling while she said it. Pretty creepy.
Let's get this straight: an anonymous source supposedly within the Obama campaign supposedly overheard a representative from Jarrett's office make this statement and attributed it to Jarrett herself; it was then passed along to some pseudonymous source named "Wall Street Insider" who then forwarded it to The Ulsterman Report ... and it eventually ended up on Glenn Beck's radio program where the quote was treated as entirely legitimate and a sign that America deserves to be destroyed.
Wasn't it just over a week ago when Beck said that someone who would so willingly and unapologetically lie to his audience must either "have deep psychological problems" or be totally insane?
On yesterday's radio program, Glenn Beck said that America is on the verge of reaping God's wrath and declared that if the American people are "so dead inside that they can no longer see the difference between good and evil" and re-elect a demagogue like President Obama, then "we have to be destroyed because we will be a remarkable evil on this planet":
If you look at history through a biblical world view, the last step before a nation is completely destroyed is they drive the righteous from among them. If this isn’t a sign of a group of people that will drive the righteous from among them, and that’s the last step before God’s wrath comes, I fear for our country and it is - it cannot be overstated, it cannot be called paranoid ... If you are a God‑fearing person, hear me. Last call, America. Last call. Because the righteous will be driven from among them.
They are nasty, divisive and, I'm sorry, but there is no way to describe that quote from Valerie Jarrett other than evil. Warning: Saul Alinsky is just the beginning of these people.
But I believe in the American people. I believe that we are not too far gone. I believe that people can watch and see the difference. They can feel the difference. When you watch Barack Obama, you can just see he is angry. When you watch Mitt Romney, you can see he is not. We are not an angry nation. We don’t listen to demagogues like that. It doesn’t work. No matter how much power he has amassed, no matter how many friends in the media he has, Americans know. And if they reject it this time, if they’re so dead inside - that’s a possibility - if they’re so dead inside that they can no longer see the difference between good and evil, we have to be destroyed because we will be a remarkable evil on this planet.
Today on "Focal Point," Bryan Fischer welcomed Fox News' Todd Starnes to provide an update on the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which Starnes insisted was Hurricane Katrina multiplied by five. While Fischer asserted that the Red Cross "has been virtually useless," Starnes insisted that the Obama administration's response has likewise been an utter failure because New York is now a "jungle" overrun by lawlessness where people have to sleep with baseball bats and knives because they are terrified of "these gangs of roving thugs."
After Starnes declared that "this is a very clear example of Barack Obama's America; this is his Katrina," Fischer again wondered if this "lawlessness" was something the nation would see on a larger scale if President Obama does not win re-election, which prompted Starnes to assert that members of his family are fully prepared to defend themselves in such an event, which is all Obama's fault:
Glenn Beck had David Barton on his radio program today to, once again, discuss their conviction that Mitt Romney is not only going to win the election tomorrow, but win it in a landslide. And the reason they are so confident, explained Beck, is because the Tea Party and prayer rallies and conservative grassroots activism are all just like what the Founding Fathers did to create this nation, so "we are repeating all of the steps that it took for use to be free around the time of the Declaration of Independence."
On top of that, Barton claimed that the conservative movement's organizational skills, voter ID programs, and "microtargeting" abilities are "so much more sophisticated" than what the Obama campaign is doing that Romney is going to end up winning the election with 330 electoral votes:
Last Wednesday evening, Cindy Jacobs and Generals International held a "Reformation Day" pre-election prayer rally where speaker after speaker prayed that the humanistic, anti-Christ systems ruling over this nation would be broken, that the Holy Spirit would reach both President Obama and the Supreme Court and bring an end to abortion, and that Christians would rise up to take back this nation through an army of evangelical voters who will put God's man in the White House.
We edited down the three hour event to this three and a half minute clip of the "highlights":
