People For the American Way is dedicated to making the promise of America real for every American: Equality. Freedom of speech. Freedom of religion. The right to seek justice in a court of law. The right to cast a vote that counts. The American Way.
Our vision is a vibrantly diverse democratic society in which everyone is treated equally under the law, given the freedom and opportunity to pursue their dreams, and encouraged to participate in our nation’s civic and political life. Our America respects diversity, nurtures creativity and combats hatred and bigotry.
We believe a society that reflects these constitutional principles and progressive values is worth fighting for, and we take seriously our responsibility to cultivate new generations of leaders and activists who will sustain these values for the life of this nation.
Our operational mission is to promote the American Way and defend it from attack, to build and nurture communities of support for our values, and to equip those communities to promote progressive policies, elect progressive candidates, and hold public officials accountable.
Every year, half a billion dollars flow through the major institutions of the Radical Right. Much of it is invested in permanent infrastructures for its work — radio and television networks… magazine and book publishing… and the machinery of public relations, organizing and political influence — all geared to imposing their narrow agenda on our laws, courts, liberties and schools.
People For the American Way’s Defenders of Democracy embody the vigilance needed to counter this massive threat. By making a monthly commitment, Defenders of Democracy give People For the American Way the steady resources needed to expose the Right’s lies, combat its drive for power, and defeat its disregard for our freedoms.
To become a Defender of Democracy is to make a statement. You will affirm your belief in the American Way each and every month. You will become a fundamental part of People For the American Way’s ability to defend our rights and freedoms from the Radical Right’s systematic attacks. You will share in our victories, and experience the personal satisfaction of doing your part to sustain the American dream.

While the election of Barack Obama and a Democratic Congress provides great hope that the wounds our rights and liberties suffered over the past eight years will begin to heal, there is much work to be done. At this critical time in history People For the American Way has the responsibility to aggressively, and steadfastly work to recreate an America which respects constitutional values. As a member of PFAW's President's Council you will provide the leadership and vision necessary to overcome and counter damages done by the Right, while protecting liberty, equality, justice, and opportunity for all Americans.
By making a commitment of $1,000 or more per year, President's Council members provide PFAW and PFAW Foundation with crucial funding to expose the lies and agenda of the Right, while combating its attempts to regain power. The average contribution is $2,500.
As a member of PFAW's President's Council you will stand with America's most committed leaders, and experience the personal satisfaction of knowing you played an integral role in defending justice, equal opportunity, tolerance, and constitutional liberty.
To join the President's Council, fill out this online form or call Courtney Brown at (202) 467-2351.
People for the American Way (PFAW) will take out a full-page ad (PDF link) in The New York Times charging the right wing with misleading the public in the ACORN voter registration controversy. The ad also challenges the press for failing to examine the fabrications made against the voter registration group and turning a blind-eye toward the right wing's ongoing effort to disenfranchise voters.
People For the American Way and People For the American Way Foundation, affiliated national social justice advocacy organizations with headquarters in Washington, have named Sharon J. Lettman as Executive Vice President of Leadership Programs and External Affairs and Linnea Hegarty as Senior Director of Development. The Connecticut Supreme Court today ruled that the State Constitution requires the state to allow same sex couples to obtain civil marriage licenses.
"This is a proud day for the people of Connecticut, and a good day for the principle of equality," said Kathryn Kolbert, president of People For the American Way Foundation. "The Supreme Court's decision was grounded in constitutional principles and core American values. Discrimination is wrong. Unequal treatment under the law is wrong.
Senator John McCain has been making a lot of baseless accusations lately, but he is the one with the troubling past. McCain and Marylin Shannon — a 2008 McCain delegate and former vice chair of the Oregon Republican Party — both appeared at an August, 1993 fundraiser for the far right Oregon Citizens Alliance. McCain appeared against the advice of Mark Hatfield, a GOP senator from Oregon, who feared that the group's extremist views would taint McCain.
In response to Sarah Palin's remarks concerning the Supreme Court on Wednesday's episode of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, People For the American Way President Kathryn Kolbert issued the following statement:
