PFAW Action Fund Announces Young Elected Progressive Endorsements

People For the American Way Action Fund announced today the endorsements of a slate of dynamic young progressive candidates running for public office across the United States. The endorsees are a diverse mix of candidates 35 and under who are marking a new generation of progressive leadership for the future. These candidates and officials represent a vision that will benefit communities all over the country, as they fight for social, economic, and environmental justice, and equality for all.

The endorsements are part of People For the American Way Action Fund’s Young Elected Progressives (YEP) program. YEP evaluates and endorses young progressive candidates ages 35 and under in their bids for elected office around the U.S. at all levels.

James Albis – CT House District 99
James Albis is running for reelection to the Connecticut House of Representatives 99th District, representing East Haven. Albis has advocated consistently on behalf of the families of East Haven for better jobs, better schools, and better opportunities. In his second term as Representative, Albis worked to protect the environment, serving on the Speaker’s Task Force on Shoreline Preservation. Zachary Dorholt – MN House District 14B

PFAW Action Fund Endorses Derek Cressman for California Secretary of State

People For the American Way Action Fund has announced an endorsement of Derek Cressman’s candidacy for California Secretary of State.

“Derek Cressman has been a consistent progressive leader, standing up against big money in politics and for fairness and the people’s voice,” said PFAW Political Director Randy Borntrager. “He will serve the people of California well as Secretary of State.”

Cressman is one of five primary candidates for Secretary of State.  He served as director of the Democracy Program for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG) and the state PIRG organizations, fighting for the environment, open government, and fair elections.  He subsequently founded Earth Tones, an environmentally friendly communications company that donates 100 percent of its profits to environmental groups.

In 2006 Cressman began working with Common Cause on its groundbreaking voting rights and elections programs, eventually directing the organization’s Citizens United information campaign. While at Common Cause, Cressman led 35 state chapters as vice president for states. During his tenure, Common Cause expanded its coordination of grassroots organizing and advocacy on money in politics across all of its local chapters, pursuing local ordinances and referenda as a strategy to draw more attention to the issue.

PFAW Action Fund Endorses Will Jawando for MD-20 Delegate

People For the American Way Action Fund has announced an endorsement of William Jawando’s candidacy for Maryland District 20 Delegate as part of PFAW’s Young Elected Progressives program.

Jawando, age 31, is one of eight primary candidates for the three delegate seats, including incumbent Sheila Hixson. He grew up in the Long Branch community of Silver Spring, and currently resides in White Oak with his wife and three daughters. A former White House and Congressional staffer, he currently serves on the Montgomery County Public School’s African American Student Achievement Action Group. He also has served on the Montgomery County Commission on Juvenile Justice, the Montgomery County Nighttime Economy Taskforce, and the Montgomery County African Advisory Group.

“Will Jawando is a committed progressive leader who stands for fairness, equality, and justice for all,” said PFAW Political Director Randy Borntrager. “He will be a strong progressive voice in Annapolis.”

While serving on Capitol Hill in the offices of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senator Sherrod Brown, and then-Senator Barack Obama, Jawando crafted and negotiated legislation to expand early childhood education programs and make college more accessible and affordable. As an associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement he worked on pay equity legislation, voting rights, and justice policy. He then served as deputy director of strategic partnerships at the US Department of Education.

Previously, as director of government relations at Discovery Communications, he organized advocacy efforts among government and non-government stakeholders, national and local nonprofits, and advocacy groups. Notable achievements included a Montgomery County program to bridge digital divides in its communities and encourage more young people to study science, technology, engineering, and math. He currently is of counsel at The Raben Group, a public policy advocacy firm.

Will Jawando’s positions on women’s health, comprehensive immigration reform, public education funding, equality for all Americans, money in politics – as well as his expressed positions on a range of other issues – distinguish him as a standout young progressive candidate for Maryland District 20 Delegate.

Rep. Kendrick Meek won a three-way Democratic Senate primary in Florida yesterday. People For the American Way Voters Alliance has endorsed Meek, citing his history of working for voting rights, public education, and reproductive freedom.
