Facts About Vouchers

How Much Do Vouchers Really Cost?

Voucher programs have already cost public school children millions of dollars, and could literally cost taxpayers billions in the future. Although advocates claim that voucher systems save taxpayer money, their estimates fail to take into account the cost of services that most private schools do not provide—such as breakfast and lunch programs, health services, aid for children with disabilities, special education, ESL programs, counselors and transportation. Further, they fail to account for private school costs that are subsidized by either the state or, in the case of religious schools, the church. Finally, they neglect to factor in the huge costs of administration and oversight that a publicly funded voucher system would entail.
