Right Wing Leftovers - 1/21/14

  • The Washington Post reports that "former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were charged Tuesday with illegally accepting gifts, luxury vacations and large loans from a wealthy Richmond-area businessman who sought special treatment from state government."
  • The Pacific Justice Institute continues its crusade against a transgender student at a Colorado school.
  • Sen. David Vitter has announced that he is running for governor of Louisiana. FRC's Tony Perkins has contemplated his own run for Congress, so perhaps he'll make a run for Vitter's now open seat.
  • David Lane's American Renewal Project is praising RNC Chairman Reince Priebus for supporting the March for Life.
  • Finally, Herman Cain is mad: "So how do Democrats celebrate Martin Luther King Day this year? By attacking black people!"

The Spirit Of Selma: Moral March In Raleigh, NC

The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision and related rulings undermining the nation’s campaign finance laws opened the doors to massive corporate and right-wing spending. Nowhere have the results been more catastrophic than in North Carolina, where a right-wing takeover subjected state residents to an avalanche of far-right legislation targeting children, teachers, voting rights, and more.

Last year PFAW’s Miranda Blue and Calvin Sloan documented the far-right takeover of state politics that was funded by billionaire Art Pope with the help of GOP strategist and current U.S. Senate candidate from Virginia, Ed Gillespie.  In 2012, Pope and his allies poured millions of dollars into elections for the state legislature and millions more to elect Gov. Pat McCrory.

Once they got into power, with Pope himself installed as McCrory’s budget director, North Carolina citizens were subjected to the full fury of a far-right, Tea Party-on-steroids legislative agenda. Education spending was slashed and thousands of teachers fired while tax dollars were diverted to school vouchers.

Hundreds of thousands of citizens were denied Medicaid and unemployment benefits while taxes were cut for the state’s richest residents. And in order to perpetuate the power of Pope’s puppets, one of the nation’s worst, most restrictive voting laws was put into place to disenfranchise voters, with an assist from the Supreme Court’s gutting of a key section of the Voting Rights Act.

But North Carolina has not given Americans only a terrifying look at what a Tea Party-run country would look like. It has also given us an inspiring example of grassroots organizing on behalf of a very different set of values.  Led by Rev. William Barber, head of the state’s NAACP chapter, North Carolinans began “Moral Mondays” protests at the state capitol. They were dismissed as “morons” and outside agitators by right-wing legislators. One of Pope’s right-wing groups published personal information of protestors online.

But those efforts did nothing to squelch the Moral Mondays movement, which drew thousands of people to the weekly protests.  Hundreds were arrested for nonviolent civil disobedience.

Now Barber and the diverse coalition he leads have put out a call to people across North Carolina and the rest of the country to come to Raleigh on February 8 for what they hope will become the largest civil rights gathering in the south since an interfaith, interracial group of people responded to Dr. King’s call to join civil rights marchers in Selma.

On Tuesday, Rev. Barber spoke to bloggers about Moral Mondays, the February 8 march, and the values-based “fusion” organizing that is sustaining the pro-justice movement in North Carolina. If you’re going to change America, he said, you have to change the south – with broad-based, locally led movements in every state.

Barber emphasized that his movement was not partisan – that many independents and Republicans have joined in the Moral Mondays protests against the extremist and unjust laws passed by the far-right faction that now runs the state government. What motivates the new coalition, Barber said, is a combination of the constitutional principle of the common good and the biblical principle of caring for the vulnerable. A few days before the march, a policy briefing will examine the moral, economic, political and social costs of the state’s regressive legislation.

One goal of turning February 8 into a national event, Barber said, is to discourage right-wing strategists who hope to duplicate Pope’s takeover and subsequent imposition of extreme policies that Barber describes as “constitutionally inconsistent, morally indefensible, and economically insane.”

You can find out more about the February 8 march at the event website.

Lively: Right To Choose 'Robs' Men Of 'Their Biblical Authority As Heads of Households'

Perhaps looking to strengthen his issue portfolio as he runs to be governor of Massachusetts, anti-gay activist Scott Lively has posted a list on his website of the "top seven reasons I am pro-life." Although the first few are standard fare (e.g. "abortion is just another name for murder"), Lively strays off the pro-life movement's messaging when he goes into the reasons why a woman's right to choose undermines men's "biblical authority."

"Legalized abortion robs fathers of their fundamental rights as parents, and their Biblical authority as heads of their households," Lively contends. In the case of rape, he adds, "a child must never be required to pay for the sins of his father." But among all this, he concludes, it is women who are "degraded" by the right to choose.

The remaining three items are statements of self-evident truth.

5. Because legalized abortion robs fathers of their fundamental rights as parents, and their Biblical authority as heads of their households.

6. Because women are degraded and harmed by the choice to kill their own children.

7. Because even in the case of rape or incest, a child must never be required to pay for the sins of his father.

Anti-Choice Group Cites Martin Luther King Jr. In 'The Dream Is Dead' Campaign

Yet another Religious Right group is citing Martin Luther King Jr., who championed reproductive rights and Planned Parenthood, in a push to criminalize abortion.

The Radiance Foundation, relying on discredited claims that Planned Parenthood is pursuing black genocide, introduces its "The Dream Is Dead" advertising campaign by claiming that banning abortion will offer women "real choices" and restore liberty.

In 1963 when Martin Luther King Jr. shared his dream with the nation, he never envisioned an America where ”reproductive justice” would end 56 million innocent human lives. His dream never pictured a nation where black boys and black girls would never be able to join hands with white boys and white girls, as sisters and brothers, because “freedom of choice” determined some humans are simply not equal. His dream never imagined that in the state where millions have been welcomed into a harbor that serves as a shining beacon of Liberty, millions would be violently deprived of their own life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

...

Abortion is beyond a “healthcare” issue; it is a justice issue. New York women and teens deserve more than a butcher posing as a physician. They deserve more than a culture of massive abandonment that leaves so many single moms in poverty. They need better resources that give them real choices–not an industry that profits when someone dies.

Our country has already been down this road of injustice before. Any time in human history when a government determines someone is less than human, destruction and violence always follow. New York served as a vital part of the underground railroad for slaves deemed less than human by politicians. The Empire State should reclaim it’s role in elevating human dignity by rejecting a culture of death and an abortion industry birthed in eugenic racism. Just as Martin Luther King Jr. boldly spoke to a nation’s conscience on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial over 50 years ago:“Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.”

Joe Miller Rails Against 'Government Control' 'Scams' He Once Relied On

Joe Miller, who is once again running for Senate in Alaska, this time against Democratic incumbent Mark Begich, is a Tea Party candidate who enjoys railing against government programs that he himself has leaned on in the past.

Miller, who received federal farm subsidies and health care assistance (the latter of which he later claimed was unconstitutional), told Tea Party Express in an interview posted today that programs aimed at reducing income inequality are just "scams" meant to "increase government control" and prevent Americans from being "fully released to pursue those opportunities and abilities that God has given them."

The real inequality that's occurred here is what Obama's done to the economy and what that has done to job opportunity compared to what could happen if the correct approach were taken, and that is getting government out of the way. And, again, that's kind of an oversimplification, but what we mean by that is cutting taxes, cutting regulation, creating opportunity, allowing American ingenuity, allowing that productivity that I referred to before to be fully rewarded without the government slowing it down.

And that is the answer, it's not to shift wealth or create additional government dependancy. I mean, that's really what the left and some on the right like -- not on the right, but some, shall we call them RINOs, like. They like creating programs that increase government control, governmental dependency. And that's all that these scams that they call income redistribution do, is that they just create more of a hook the government puts into people that does not allow them to be fully released to pursue those opportunities and abilities that God has given them to actually create income for their families.

Feder Bashes 'Senator Juan' McCain And Immigration Advocates For Eroding 'National Identity'

Don Feder, the communications director for the World Congress of Families, is out with another anti-immigrant blog post, this time attacking immigration reform proponents like "Senator Juan" McCain for promoting the "loss of national identity" through immigration

In the blog post, posted in his capacity as a freelance "political/communications consultant" on the website GrasstopsUSA.com, Feder promotes the now-familiar line that Mitt Romney lost the 2012 election because he just wasn't conservative enough (or, in Feder's words, lacked "manly firmness"). In particular, FEder attacks McCain  and GOP strategist Karl Rove for their support for immigration reform, which he claims will turn off "Main Street voters" who "care deeply about...loss of national identity."

"Rove isn't just wrong, he's wrong the way Napoleon was wrong when he invaded Russia," Feder writes. "Today, elections aren't won in the middle but on the fringes."

He contends that the Democratic base, or "fringe," constitutes "the ideological, the envious, public employees, angry, single women and the mooch brigade."

Last year, Feder wrote a virulently anti-immigrant blog post, in which he claimed that "the illegal immigrants swarming over our southern border are more akin to the pagan armies which regularly invaded the land of Israel and were repulsed by military force."

Although Feder has written these rants in his personal capacity, his railing against Latino immigrants would seemato conflict with his employer's goals of uniting "many national, ethnic, cultural, social and religious communities" in their anti-gay, anti-choice cause.

The Democrats took what should have been an advantage in a down economy and turned it into a negative. Romney was one of those rich Republicans (it's hard to be successful in business and not get rich) who didn't care about the little guy, they told us. Instead of a venture capitalist who had saved ailing businesses, he was a corporate corsair and tax-cheat who cannibalized companies and slashed jobs.

The middle class never bought this; Obama's base did. The message was aimed at mobilizing the ideological, the envious, public employees, angry, single women and the mooch brigade – the Democrats' core constituency. Romney's answer was not marked by manly firmness, "The president is a nice guy, but we just can't afford him for four more years," Mitt the Mild peeped. Republicans accepted the media line that voters hate negative campaigning and will punish the perps. Democrats didn't.

Rove isn't just wrong, he's wrong the way Napoleon was wrong when he invaded Russia. Today, elections aren't won in the middle but on the fringes. It's not about who can appeal to so-called independents (most are aligned with one party or the other, but won't admit it) but who can best identify and mobilize their base. At this, Democrats are particularly adept and Republicans depressingly inept.

...

Supposedly, Romney lost Latinos with his silly self-deportation plan. But in 2008, Juan McCain, Senor Amnesty, got 31% of the Hispanic vote, compared to 28% for Mitt in 2012. If Romney had done as well – or as poorly – as McCain, he would have gotten four percentage points more (of 9% of the electorate) and the outcome, you do the math, would have been exactly the same.

This year, Wall Street Republicans are advising the party to get immigration off the table, to avoid further offending Hispanics.

If Republicans rabbits like Speaker John Boehner help the president to pass another amnesty, two things will happen: Hispanics will still vote overwhelming Democratic, based on their perceived economic interests. Hispanic households are twice as likely to benefit from a major welfare program as white families (40% versus 20%).

At the same time, Main Street voters – who care deeply about fairness (for taxpayers, workers and legal immigrants), loss of national identity, national security and the economic consequences of illegal immigration – will walk away from the GOP in disgust.

...

Recall Boehner's senseless attack on the Tea Parties (which made him Speaker) this fall. In a just-published interview in the News Republic, Senator Juan slammed the Tea Parties and called Fox News "schizophrenic." Coming from a man who's famous for his borderline psychotic temper, this must hurt.

(Emphases ours).

Hypocrisy, Thy Name Is Glenn Beck

There can be no better demonstration of Glenn Beck's raging hypocrisy than the perfect example he inadvertently provided on his television program last night.

Extremely disturbed by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's statement that "extreme conservatives ... have no place in the state of New York," Beck dedicated his entire opening monologue last night to warning that this is just the sort of rhetoric that led to the Holocaust and declaring that "if this is the way that America is going, then I renounce my citizenship."

"If this is what America is going to become," Beck said, "I don't want to be an American any more":

During his monologue, Beck said that it is never right to banish a group of people simply based on what they believe and that any leader who suggest doing so ought to be widely denounced by people on all sides of the political spectrum.

So, of course, Beck followed up that passionate monologue with a segment in which he interviewed none other than John Hagee, who has declared on multiple occasions that atheists are not wanted in America and should get on a plane and leave the country:

After spending his entire twenty minute monologue decrying those who say that people holding certain beliefs are not welcome in America, Beck then sat down to interview a man who has, on multiple occasions, done the very thing he just spent his entire monologue denouncing and Beck said nothing ... other than strongly encouraging his viewers to donate to Hagee's organization.

Operation American Spring Hopes To Shut Down Washington, For Freedom

Yesterday, Operation American Spring organizer Harry Riley appeared on Alan Colmes' radio show, where he explained his plan to bring 10-20 million people into the nation's capital for a rally to overthrow Obama with the help of militias.

While Riley seems to have downgraded his turnout estimate, which organizers previously put at 30 million people, he told Colmes that the demonstration will be so "massive" that it will stretch into Maryland and Virginia and will block traffic and commerce.

"[W]e will interrupt the traffic, we will interrupt the commerce," Riley predicted. "That's the way it is when we're pursuing freedom and liberty for all."

Riley: We are intending to field about 10-20 million people in Washington, D.C. and we're going to close it down. We are going to circulate, clear out into Maryland and Virginia.

Colmes: You are predicting 10 million people will be doing this?

Riley: Absolutely.

...

Riley: We will have a gigantic, massive rally on May 16. Then some of those people will have to go home, they have to work. We will come up with a plan where we keep a large body of patriots there over a long period of time. We've come up with a plan whereby there will be a flow-in weekly.

Colmes: Keep them where? Where will they be exactly?

Riley: They will be all over DC. Wherever they can find a spot to stand, that's where they'll be. Around the White House, around the Capitol, on the Mall, all over.

Colmes: They are just going to be standing and doing what?

Riley: They are going to be there and we will be presenting grievances and our demands. We will wait, we will be there, we will interrupt the traffic, we will interrupt the commerce.

Colmes: You're going to stop the traffic flow, you're going to stop commerce.

Riley: Mhmm.

Colmes: You're going to get in the way of the ingress and egress of people going about their daily business and really get in the way of citizens who through no fault of their own are just happen to be going about their daily lives, right?

Riley: That's the way it is when we're pursuing freedom and liberty for all.

Colmes: So you are actually threatening obstruction?

Riley: What I'm saying is, we're going to shut the city down. You can call it what you want but we're going to do it in a peaceful, non-violent, unarmed manner of citizens expressing our disgust with the deceit, the betrayal and the lies the government has been feeding us the last five years.

Colmes: What's your plan to stop traffic? How are you going to do that?

Riley: We're going to have to be in the streets, that's how we stop it.

Colmes: You're going to be standing in the streets stopping traffic?

Riley: Absolutely.

Renew America: Don't Let Kids Watch Hell-Bound Johnny Weir

The anti-gay news outlet Renew America is upset that NBC Sports hired openly gay figure skater Johnny Weir to provide commentary for the upcoming Winter Olympics, and is warning parents not to let their children watch figure skating alone.

In a post on the site, Catholic News Agency's Louie Verrecchio mocks Weir as "a flamboyant, cross-dressing, homosexual man who thinks he has a 'husband'" and a model for "the moral decline of society."

"So, unless you want your children exposed to the likes of Johnny Weir, an icon of the popular culture's Hell bent determination to undermine the objective truth about marriage and family," Verrecchio continues. "If you allow it at all, don't let your children to watch the Olympics without supervision."

Consider how far we've fallen over the last four years:

- The Connecticut Insurance Department joined several other states indirecting all health insurance companies operating in the state to provide "gender transition" coverage.

- Colorado Division of Civil Rights officials ruled against a suburban Colorado Springs school district saying it discriminated against a 6-year-old "transgender" boy, Coy Mathis, by preventing him from using the girls' bathroom.

- The state of California became the first state to enact "transgender rights" for K-12 students, requiring public schools to allow those students to choose whichever restroom or locker room they want to use.

- Twelve more states have passed so-called "same-sex marriage" laws, raising the total from five to seventeen.

Each one of these quantum leaps in the moral decline of society took place in my own United States, but our neighbors to the north made their own contributions.

Bringing the discussion back to sports, Canadian media giant Rogers Sports Net unceremoniously fired anchor Damian Goddard in May of 2011 for sending out a Twitter message, from his personal account, on his own time, voicing his "support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage."

Goddard hasn't worked in the industry since.

Think about that for a moment:

A respected sports anchor finds himself unemployed as a result of having voiced his Catholic faith on personal time; meanwhile, NBC Sports is pleased to hire a flamboyant, cross-dressing, homosexual man who thinks he has a "husband" in order to provide color commentary (presumably rainbow) to viewers worldwide during the upcoming Winter Olympics.

So, unless you want your children exposed to the likes of Johnny Weir, an icon of the popular culture's Hell bent determination to undermine the objective truth about marriage and family, as well as the God-given characteristics that make us either male or female...

BE FOREWARNED: If you allow it at all, don't let your children to watch the Olympics without supervision.

WND: Obama's America Is 'The Land Of The Enslaved Effeminates'

WorldNetDaily's Gina Loudon believes that young people will rise up against President Obama once they realize that he has "taken the hard-earned 'Land of the Free and Home of the Brave' and turned it into 'The Land of the Enslaved Effeminates and the Home of the Cowards.'"

The right-wing columnist and talk show host writes that Obamacare advertisements promote "homo-erotic twerking," part of a larger Hollywood agenda that "tore down men and glorified world peace and transvestites."

Gen Xers had what they needed growing up, but they had no idea how they got it. Gen X and their children, the Millennials, elected Barack Obama. This formula resulted in the great-grandchildren of the Greatest Generation getting stuck with the bill for their Baby Boomers, who are like the spoiled child with a trust who can’t appreciate anything. They stood by distracted while Hollywood tore down men and glorified world peace and transvestites. Then Hollywood joined forces with the D.C. beltway and planned the final knife in the back of America – undermining the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

It all sounded so good in the name of tolerance, but it doesn’t do much when the country is faced with an enemy, and homes raised by single parents are lying in ruin at the feet of this once great nation. The saddest part of all might be that in one administration, this president and his cronies have taken the hard-earned “Land of the Free and Home of the Brave” and turned it into “The Land of the Enslaved Effeminates and the Home of the Cowards.”

They don’t recognize tyranny even when their government is handing down edicts to enslave them. They have no motivation or courage to stand up to what has happened because they are too distracted with “Bread and Circus.

...

We thought Obamacare had stooped as low as it could go, spending half-a-billion dollars of taxpayer money on one big failed website, but no! They have hit an all-time low! Homo-erotic twerking – this makes Miley Cyrus look like Mary Poppins!
