People For the American Way today released a new TV ad in New Hampshire, challenging presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s recent assertion that “corporations are people.”

In an event in Iowa last week, Romney responded to an audience member who suggested that he be open to raising taxes on corporations, “Corporations are people, my friend. Of course they are. Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people. Where do you think it goes?”

“Mitt Romney has exposed the  fallacy behind the GOP’s disastrous economic agenda, with his contention that ‘corporations are people,’” said Michael Keegan, President of People For the American Way. “At a time when CEO salaries are soaring and wealth disparities are growing, Romney and his GOP allies continue to refuse to make corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share. Instead, Romney is standing up for his wealthy corporate backers at the expense of the individual Americans who are bearing the brunt of the economic downturn.  All Americans – and all American voters – are real people, and we expect the government to work for us, not for corporations.”

People For the American Way is also circulating a petition to its members urging Romney to retract his comment.
