Campaigning in Florida today, Mitt Romney doubled down on his claim that “corporations are people.”

“I was in Iowa the other day, and people suggested that we just raise taxes on corporations,” Romney said, according to Politico. “I told them, corporations are people…Raising taxes on corporations is raising taxes on people.”

When Romney first made the claim in Iowa last month, People For the American Way responded with a TV ad that aired in New Hampshire. The ad, Mitt Romney: Man of the Corporations can be viewed here.

“It’s no surprise that Mitt Romney is more interested in pandering to the corporate elite than in addressing the needs of ordinary Americans – even if that means repeatedly defying logic,” said Michael Keegan, President of People For the American Way.

“Everybody should know that corporations aren’t people – that’s how many of them can get away with paying far less in taxes than actual human beings. Corporate profits are soaring, even as more and more Americans are out of jobs and facing poverty. If Mitt Romney thinks corporations are people, he shouldn’t be giving them special favors and helping them ship jobs overseas, as he did at Bain Capital. He should be asking them to give up a few loopholes and pitch in to help solve a crisis that is hurting real Americans.”
