Today, People For the American Way (PFAW) announced its endorsement of former Governor Ted Strickland in his race to unseat Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH).

“Strickland is exactly the type of leader that Ohioans and all Americans need in the Senate today,” said PFAW President Michael Keegan. “He has a strong record of standing up for core Constitutional values and fighting for working families, from his work to ban discrimination based on sexual identity or gender identity to his investments in public education and quality, affordable healthcare. Strickland has long understood the critical importance of fair and just courts. While his opponent has engaged in harmful partisan politics, refusing to hold hearings or a vote on President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Strickland will fulfill his Constitutional duties in the Senate by giving fair consideration to judicial nominees.”

"I am honored to have received this endorsement from People for the American Way, an organization that shares my deep commitment to the fundamental ideas of justice, equality and economic opportunity for every American,” said Ted Strickland. “In the Senate I will stand up for these values because they are the foundation of an America where working people can succeed and have a fair shot at building a good life for themselves and their families. Whether the challenge is fair wages, protecting retirement security or affordable education, I will never stop fighting for the interests of Ohio’s working people — that’s where I’m from, that who I care about and that’s who I’ll always put first.”

As a Senator, Strickland will continue his long history of creating jobs and protecting Constitutional freedoms. Among Strickland’s many accomplishments, when Strickland served as governor of Ohio, unemployment went down and schools went from being ranked 27th in the country to fifth best. He increased diversity in the state’s judiciary branch, including appointing Ohio’s first ever Latino appellate judge. In addition, Strickland strongly supports a woman’s right to choose, and he has defended the critical work of Ohio’s Planned Parenthood. While Strickland’s opponent has voted against overturning Citizens United, Strickland understands the importance of ensuring everyone has an equal voice in our democracy, and will work to make our political system more fair for everyone.”
