In a 55 to 41 vote today, the Senate rejected an attempt to move forward on consideration of the DREAM Act, which would lay out a path to citizenship for young adults who were brought to the United States illegally as children, and who graduate from high school with the commitment to attend college or join the military.

Michael Keegan, President of People For the American Way, issued the following statement:
 
“The DREAM Act was meant to fix one of the great injustices in American law—the punishment of children for the actions of their parents. The 65,000 young men and women who would have benefited from the DREAM Act have shown the courage to succeed against tough odds and a commitment to making their country a better place. But now, because of the divisive politics of Senate Republicans, they will be treated like criminals in the only homes they know. The land of hope and opportunity can, and must, do better than this.”
