WASHINGTON, D.C.— As the House Judiciary Committee is holding hearings today on the Intelligence Committee’s impeachment report, People For the American Way Senior Fellow Elliot Mincberg released the following statement:

“The evidence presented today overwhelmingly shows that President Trump has put himself before the country and abused his authority in soliciting Ukraine to announce investigations that would help Trump politically, withholding vital aid appropriated by Congress in order to put more pressure on Ukraine, and obstructing Congress’ investigations. Republicans primarily continued their efforts to disrupt and distract, and their few statements about the facts – such as the assertion that Trump did not ask Ukraine to investigate Biden on the July 25 call, that Ukraine did not know about the freezing of vital aid until August, and that Trump was ‘forced to resist’ Congress’ witness and document requests—were clearly proven false. Most importantly, today’s evidence backed up the conclusion that Trump continues to present a ‘clear and present danger’ to free and fair elections next November, and that prompt action by Congress to mitigate that threat is crucial.”

Elliot Mincberg has researched and analyzed the Supreme Court, the Department of Justice, religious liberty and other civil rights/civil liberties issues for more than three decades. He is also a former chief counsel for oversight and investigations of the House Judiciary Committee, where he gained extensive  experience with impeachment proceedings.
