WASHINGTON—In response to the first meeting of President Trump’s “Election Integrity” Commission, Diallo Brooks, Director of Outreach and Public Engagement at People For the American Way issued the following statement:

“The so-called ‘Election Integrity’ Commission was specifically designed to provide justification for making it harder for Americans, especially people of color, to cast a ballot. No doubt it will also attempt to manufacture justifications for Donald Trump’s repeated and demonstrably false claim that he only lost the popular vote after millions of people cast illegal ballots. The commission is comprised of some of the most strident opponents of voting rights in America today.

“Let’s be clear: Restricting the right to vote is an affront to our values and our democracy. For a president who seems obsessed with tweeting about his intolerance for “witch hunts,” Trump’s embrace of this delusional and debunked conspiracy of widespread in-person voter fraud—and his formation of this sham commission—is yet another example of his administration’s assault on all Americans who believe in fact-based decision-making.”

Earlier today, People For the American Way helped lead a #RespectMyVote rally in front of the White House with a broad coalition of national groups to protest the commission.
