New People For the American Way Report Exposes the Ugly Truth That Long Predates Recent Roy Moore Sexual Assault Revelations

A new report released today by Right Wing Watch, a project of People For the American Way, documents Roy Moore’s long and troubling history of extremism.

Roy Moore: A History of Bigotry, Extremism and Contempt for the Rule of Law,” notes that while it is not clear where recent allegations of sexual misconduct will lead, “Moore’s record of extremism and contempt for the rule of law has been crystal clear, and the fact that so many Republican elected officials have been willing to support him in spite of, or because of, that history is itself scandalous.”

“Roy Moore has spent decades promoting his extreme Christian-nation ideology, resisting equality for LGBTQ Americans, and defying court orders when he disagrees with them,” said PFAW Senior Fellow Peter Montgomery, author of the report. “Moore’s record of disregard for non-Christians and hostility to the rights of women and LGBTQ people make him unworthy to serve in the U.S. Senate.”

The new Right Wing Watch report digs into Moore’s history of extremism, both well-known and little-remembered, from his opposition to a Hindu prayer in the U.S. Senate to his close relationship with a neo-Confederate, Christian nationalist debt collector to his support for criminalizing homosexuality.

Moore originally achieved notoriety for being twice removed from his seat on the Alabama Supreme Court after defying federal court rulings. This month, he was thrust into the spotlight again when multiple women came forward alleging that Moore, now a Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, had pursued sexual relationships with them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.

People For the American Way’s research team has been following the career of Roy Moore since the 1990s, when, as a state judge in Alabama, he insisted on hanging a hand-carved copy of the Ten Commandments in his courtroom and made a practice of starting courtroom sessions with Christian prayers, making him a hero to the Religious Right.

People For the American Way is a progressive advocacy organization founded to fight right-wing extremism and defend constitutional values including free expression, religious liberty, equal justice under the law, and the right to meaningfully participate in our democracy.
