In response to the Supreme Court’s rulings in CBOCS West Inc. v. Humphries and Gomez-Perez v. Potter, People For the American Way Foundation president Kathryn Kolbert issued the following statement:

“In case after case, the Supreme Court’s right-wing justices have teamed up to undercut the rights of everyday Americans and protect powerful business and government interests. Today’s rulings were welcome exceptions.

Workers must be able to report workplace discrimination without facing retaliation, and we’re pleased that a majority of the justices affirmed that basic right. But today’s decisions do not erase the recent trend we have seen on the Supreme Court toward interpreting fundamental rights in narrow and cramped ways that favor the powerful over the powerless and giant corporations and the government over individual Americans.

We applaud today’s decisions as a rare departure from this destructive trend.”
