Senate Republicans added two new public disservices to their resume. On Tuesday, they shattered the 2005 "Gang of 14" deal that prevented filibusters of judicial nominees in all but extraordinary circumstances. Then on Thursday, they blocked President Obama's nominee to head a new federal agency simply because they do not want that agency to exist -- a move that will have untold consequences on future attempts to staff the executive branch.

On Monday night, stars and political leaders gathered in Los Angeles to celebrate the 30th anniversary of People For the American Way Foundation and the 89th birthday of PFAW Foundation founder Norman Lear. California Gov. Jerry Brown, PFAW Foundation board members Alec Baldwin and Tracey Edmonds, Jane Lynch, will.i.am, Rob Reiner, J.J. Abrams, Lisa Ling and others joined the celebration.

The Supreme Court today announced that it would hear arguments in several cases challenging the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, President Obama's signature achievement and the most important piece of health care reform legislation in a generation. It will be a test of whether or not the federal government will continue to have the authority it needs to solve the challenges we face as a nation.

Ledyard, New York Town Board Fails to Uphold NY Marriage Equality Act

After meeting Monday night, the Town Board of Ledyard, NY has failed to address the Ledyard Town Clerk’s refusal to fulfill her lawful obligations and sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples. The meeting was held after People For the American Way Foundation, working with the law firm Proskauer Rose, LLP, sent a letter to the town supervisor demanding that the town clerk be directed to certify the marriages of same-sex couples or to resign. Additionally, People For the American Way Foundation has launched a petition calling on the clerk to do her job according to the law or else resign.

At a news conference, Mitt Romney urged Texas Gov. Rick Perry to disavow the remarks of his endorser Robert Jeffress, a Religious Right leader who has called Mormonism a "cult." People For the American Way today echoed Romney’s appeal to Perry, but also urged both candidates to disavow endorsers who have perpetuated misinformation about and fear of American Muslims.

GOP Candidates to Share Stage with Radical Right's Foremost Bigot

At next week's Values Voter Summit, Mitt Romney is scheduled to take the stage immediately before Bryan Fischer, an American Family Association (AFA) spokesman with a long and shocking record of bigotry against gays and lesbians, American Muslims, Native Americans and other minority groups. Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain and Rick Santorum are also scheduled to speak at the event, which is sponsored by the anti-gay Family Research Council, the AFA, and other Religious Right groups. PFAW is urging these candidates for our nation's highest office to condemn bigotry.
