Demand that the DOJ Investigate Clarence Thomas!

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE:

Troubling new reporting has revealed that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has demonstrated repeated knowing and willful violations of federal ethics requirements by not reporting gifts he has received since at least 2004. And despite Justice Thomas’s assertion that these gifts did not meet the requirements established in the federal ethics statute, a closer review of the law provides clear guidance on what constitutes a reportable “gift” and it’s undeniable that he has received many gifts that have gone unreported that would meet this legal definition.

I urge you to open an investigation into Justice Thomas’s violation of federal ethics laws and pursue appropriate civil and criminal penalties for his misconduct.

Luxury vacations, private jets, an island-hopping cruise, travel to exclusive resorts, and more were all gifts Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas received from Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow, according to explosive new reporting from ProPublica. And none of these gifts were reported as required by federal law.

This brazen violation of federal law underscores a troubling pattern Justice Thomas has of either underreporting or choosing to not report gifts at all – demonstrating a knowing and willful violation of the law despite his assertion that the gifts did not meet the reporting requirements.

People For is calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate Justice Thomas for his serious lapse in adhering to ethics requirements and pursue any appropriate civil or criminal penalties.
