Atlanta—Heading into GOTV weekend, People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! program announced a closing radio ad in its six-figure Spanish-language radio ad buy across Georgia. The ad features comedian and People For board member Cristela Alonzo, who offers a light-hearted and inspiring perspective on the importance of electing Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff to the U.S. Senate in the January 5 runoff elections.

The ad begins airing today and runs through Election Day, Jan. 5. Alonzo urges listeners to consider who controls the Senate and the impact they have on supporting financial aid during the pandemic, better health insurance, and raising the minimum wage.

Listen to Cristela Alonzo’s ad here.

“Latinos across Georgia are energized and ready to vote for new leadership in Washington,” said Alonzo. “The Latino community turned out in record numbers this November, proving that their votes should never be taken for granted. We know what’s at stake which is why we cannot continue to allow Republican control of the senate. Georgia can make the difference between a senate that works with Joe Biden to make change or a senate that stands in his way as he fights to end this pandemic and protect access to healthcare for every American. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock want to work for change. They will work with Biden to help make progress on the issues that impact our lives if we show up and vote by January 5th.”

“Every voter has to get the message that their vote counts,” said People For the American Way board member and civil rights and labor leader Dolores Huerta. “Latino voters, especially young Latino voters, need to hear that they have the power to decide the outcome of the Georgia senate elections. Latinos helped make the difference in Georgia this November but the work is not done. We need Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in the senate working alongside Joe Biden for change on DACA and temporary status, healthcare and jobs. These are the issues that impact all of our lives and Latino voters can help set a new direction for our country when they vote by January 5th.”

“Latino voters helped make it clear that Georgia is at the forefront of a new south coalition for progressive change in America,” said People For the American Way President Ben Jealous. “The New South includes a growing population of Latinos and young progressives who want to see us go much further and faster on the big issues of our time, from climate change to finally ensuring that healthcare is a right for every American. The next four years, under Joe Biden’s leadership will be critical and he will need progressive leaders like Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock backing him in the senate. Latino voters have already beat Trump once in Georgia and they can do it again in January by electing Jon and Raphael to the senate.”

“The Georgia runoff elections are all about turnout,” said People For the American Way Political Director Lizet Ocampo. “The early voting numbers have been very similar to the general election so we believe the outlook is promising. We still must communicate to voters that this election is happening and that the stakes are high when it comes to the issues that Latino communities care about. It is incredibly important that Latinos turn out to vote. We can decide this election.”

Exit polls show that Latino voters made up seven percent of the electorate for the November general election– that would be an estimated 345,000 voters.

People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! program was the first to invest in reaching out to Latino voters through Spanish language political ads in Georgia in 2014, and was the only group invested in Spanish-language media across the state focused on the presidential election during the 2020 elections.

SPANISH

Hola. Yo soy comediante Cristela Alonzo. Me entienden?

Hi. I am comedian Cristela Alonzo. As President, Joe Biden will have a COVID relief package that can pass, but it needs the Senate’s support. Imagine being able to have this moment in our lives and finally being able to celebrate as if we are at a wedding and the mariachi has just arrived. You get it? The problem? Right now, Republicans control the Senate. But this January 5 we have an election in Georgia for two Senators who can shift control of the Senate to the Democrats.

Georgia’s Republican Senators are desperate. They don’t even want to recognize Biden as president-elect, as if this is going to change the change you made when you voted for him in November.

Together we can win again and have senators supporting financial aid in this pandemic, better health insurance and raising the minimum wage. Vote for Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock on January 5.
