“Abuelita” Reminds Voters of Trump’s Despicable Family Separation Policies
Tucson and Yuma, Arizona— Today, People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! program announced a six-figure, Spanish-language radio ad buy in Arizona, focused on Donald Trump’s anti-Latino, anti-immigrant and anti-family policies during his time in the White House.
The eight-week run started yesterday with the ad, “Abuelita,” which translates to, “Grandmother.” Listen to the radio ad here.
The ad begins airing amid several news reports about the lack of outreach to Latino communities during this 2020 presidential election cycle. There are an estimated 32 million eligible Latino voters nationwide and 1.2 million in Arizona, which represents 24 percent of all eligible voters in the state. This year Latino voters will be the largest racial or ethnic minority participating in a presidential election. Only 12.65 million Latino voters went to the polls in 2016.
“Donald Trump is a xenophobic racist and the Latino community has disproportionately felt the brunt of his hateful policies,” said President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous. “His presidency has ripped families apart, literally separating children from their parents. Trump’s policies have taken our nation to new lows for the level of respect other countries have had for the United States as a beacon of hope and opportunity for all who come here. Latino voters know what’s at stake in this election and we must do everything we can to make the case that a Biden-Harris administration will work to repair the damage done by Trump.”
“Life will not get better under Donald Trump who has called Latino immigrants animals, broken up families and put children in cages,” said People For the American Way Political Director Lizet Ocampo. “We are taking every opportunity in these last eight weeks before Election Day to remind Latino voters in Arizona and across the country, that the only way to protect our families and our communities is to vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”
“Our families and loved ones have suffered the most under Donald Trump and we cannot have another four years of his hatred and failed leadership because we need to vote to protect Latino communities, especially our immigrant families,” said People For the American Way board member, civil rights and labor leader Dolores Huerta. “Every Latino who is eligible to vote has a responsibility to stand for justice and push America toward a future that respects all of us. The only way to do that is to vote for Biden and Harris.”
