Washington D.C./Richmond, Virginia — This week, People For the American Way, in partnership with the campaign for gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, announced the latest release in a six-figure statewide Spanish language media campaign in Virginia, focused on increasing Latino turnout in support of McAuliffe in the state’s gubernatorial election.
The new TV spot emphasizes Republican candidate Glenn Youngkin’s ties to Donald Trump and his irresponsible approach to handling the COVID-19 pandemic. It contrasts the Republican candidate’s dangerous positions surrounding the management of the COVID pandemic with McAuliffe’s responsible, safe, and science-based approach to moving Virginia forward out of the pandemic.
The spot is :30 seconds long and will run on Spanish-language TV stations in Virginia from October 5, through Election Day on November 2.
The campaign kicked off with radio ads slated to run on Spanish-language radio stations across the commonwealth through November 2. Virginians began voting on September 17.
“The closer we get to election day, the more critical it becomes to get the word out about how dangerous a Glenn Youngkin victory would be for Virginians,” said President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous. “We watched Donald Trump’s disastrous policies in action at the national level for four years. We are still trying to recover from his gross mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only has Glenn Youngkin been endorsed by Donald Trump, Youngkin has praised Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, another Trump clone, for his handling of the pandemic in his state – and we all know how catastrophic that has been. The only way to stop Youngkin from bringing this disastrous COVID policy to Virginia is for Virginians to get out, make their voices heard, and vote for the candidate who has a plan to keep Virginia moving forward: Terry McAuliffe.”
“We know that Latino families in Virginia suffer disproportionately from COVID. We need someone to stand up for the health of our community, and that is Terry McAuliffe,” said People For the American Way Board member Dolores Huerta. “It would be a disaster for Glenn Youngkin to bring the Donald Trump-Ron DeSantis approach to the pandemic to the commonwealth. Terry McAuliffe has a responsible plan to get Virginia out of the pandemic that will save lives, including children’s lives. This ad is all about getting the word out to Virginia’s Latino community, so voters have the information they need when they cast their ballots.”
“The best way to defeat COVID-19, keep students in school, and keep Virginia’s economy on track is by getting every eligible Virginian from every community vaccinated as quickly as possible and I have a plan to combat this virus on day one,” said Terry McAuliffe. “Glenn Youngkin’s plan is to push anti-vaccine rhetoric that puts all Virginians at risk. That’s not leadership, it’s disqualifying.”
