Washington, D.C.—People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! program today released a new television and digital ad in Spanish for Arizona markets, hammering local Republicans for supporting Donald Trump’s agenda. The ad urges viewers to support David García for governor and U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., for U.S. Senate.

“Every day brings a new, racist attack on immigrants from President Trump, and Republicans Doug Ducey and Martha McSally back him up every time,” PFAW Political Director Lizet Ocampo said. “Ducey and McSally stand with Trump as he tries to strip people of their health coverage and kill protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Enough. The people of Arizona need real leaders who will stand up to Trump’s attack on our communities.”

Ducey and McSally “fail” on family separation

According to CNN, “Some 220 children from separated families remain in custody, four months after a judge ordered the US government to reunite the immigrant families it split up at the border.” Neither McSally nor Ducey have taken a stand against Trump’s cruel, “zero-tolerance” immigration policy that led to hundreds of families being broken up and children sent to tent cities for detention, separated from their families.

Arizona Republicans fail to protect people with pre-existing conditions

Ducey supported the national GOP’s efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act’s protections for pre-existing conditions. Politifact rated McSally’s claim that she was “leading the fight” to protect people with pre-existing conditions Mostly False and noted that she voted to repeal the legislation that first forced insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions in the first place.

The Larger Context: Reaching Out to Latino Voters Nationwide

While news stories have repeatedly echoed the message that Democrats and progressive groups “have a Latino problem,” People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! project is mounting its most robust effort ever. PFAW’s Latinos Vote! program exposes and counters anti-immigrant, anti-Latino rhetoric and policies. Through electoral work, we hold groups, leaders and influencers accountable at the polls for the harm they do to immigrant and Latino communities.

Among other activities this year, PFAW board member Dolores Huerta has been barnstorming the country, including recent and upcoming stops in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, and Texas. In addition, the group is running ads and working to turn out the Latino vote in key races across the country.
