Washington, D.C. -  Following today’s vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee to advance the nomination of Myrna Pérez for a seat on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“We applaud the Judiciary Committee for advancing the nomination of Myrna Pérez to the Second Circuit. Myrna Pérez would be an outstanding addition to the federal bench at any time, but her nomination now is exceptionally significant. At a time when threats to voting rights are ascendant in our country, Pérez is a nominee who understands that this core right is the basis of all others. She has extensive experience as a litigator and academic, as well as a lifelong commitment to civil rights. She would also be only the second Latina ever to join the Second Circuit, which serves a diverse region with a large Latinx community. The Senate should move swiftly to confirm her.”
