Washington, DC— Following today’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Myrna Pérez for a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, People for the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“We are very excited to see the Senate Judiciary Committee moving forward on the nomination of Myrna Pérez to the Second Circuit court. As we saw today, Pérez is an exceptionally qualified nominee who exemplifies the kind of jurist the American people need on our federal courts. She has dedicated her career to advancing the core right at the basis of all others: the right to vote. In addition to her professional qualifications, she would be only the second Latina ever to serve on that court, and the first since Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed to the Supreme Court. We urge members of the Senate to vote to confirm Pérez and congratulate her on today’s step forward.”
