Washington, D.C. – Following today’s announcement by Attorney General Merrick Garland that the Biden administration will sue the state of Georgia over its new voter suppression law, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“We applaud the Justice Department and the Biden administration for taking legal action against the egregious new voter suppression law in Georgia. This is why it was so important to confirm civil rights champions like Vanita Gupta and Kristen Clarke to the Justice Department: so we would once again have a department that defends our rights instead of tearing them down. This is great news that should send a strong message to other states that are contemplating measures to silence the voices and suppress the votes of American citizens.”
