Washington, D.C. – Following Terry McAuliffe’s victory in the Virginia primary, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“We congratulate former governor Terry McAuliffe on his win in the Virginia gubernatorial primary, and we look forward to working with him toward victory in November. People For the American Way was proud to support Governor McAuliffe in 2013 to beat right wing Republican Ken Cuccinelli and flip the Governor’s seat. We look forward to again supporting Governor McAuliffe against the Republican nominee Glenn Youngkin, also part of the extreme right wing.

“For nearly a decade, we have run our Latinos Vote! program in Virginia to persuade and turn out Latino voters. We were proud to help flip the Virginia legislature to Democratic control in 2019.

“Democratic leaders in the governor’s office and legislature are doing great work on behalf of Virginians and it’s critically important to keep up that momentum and progress with more wins this fall. Virginia serves as an example of a Southern state flipped blue with the subsequent policy wins that improved the lives of all Virginians in the state. We must show that it’s also an example of a Southern state staying blue and advancing progressive wins.”
