Washington, DC – As the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack prepares for public hearings this week, People For the American Way is launching a new series of videos delving into the conspiracy that led to the violence on that day. The first video explores the origins of the Stop the Steal movement and its leader, far-right activist Ali Alexander. The videos are researched and reported by People For’s Right Wing Watch analysts.

“Ali Alexander is a key figure in the plot that led to the deadly violence on January 6,” said Kristen Doerer, managing editor at Right Wing Watch, who created the video. “Alexander is a highly networked conservative operative with ties to prominent politicians and far-right activists. He was instrumental in making the so-called Stop the Steal movement a force in the conspiracy to keep Donald Trump in power after Trump lost the election. On the day of the insurrection, as a mob was breaching the Capitol, Alexander watched it all from a balcony and refused to disavow the violence. It was a chilling moment.”
“It’s critically important to remember that the January 6 attempted coup was not a spur-of-the-moment event,” said Ben Jealous, president of People For the American Way. “This was plotted and orchestrated by far-right activists who, if given a chance, will do it all again if they think they have lost an election. These activists are dangerous and have powerful connections, and now some of them are hiding in plain sight as they run for offices where they could wield power over election results. Everyone who cares about our democracy needs to watch the January 6 public hearings and take the findings to heart.”
