Washington, D.C.– Following today’s action by all Republican senators, except one, to block the opening of debate on the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“Republican Senators’ decision to block the voting rights bill named for the late civil rights icon, John Lewis, is shameful. Today my 15-year-old daughter and I were arrested outside the White House along with dozens of other youth activists, clergy, and civil rights advocates who have one simple demand: President Biden must step up and protect voting rights now. We did not elect the president and Democratic leaders in Congress so that Washington could become a place where our rights go to die. For the sake of our democracy and future generations, these leaders must act to overcome any obstacles to passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, now.”
