Washington, DC— Following the filibuster and vote by the U.S. Senate to block the creation of a bipartisan, investigatory commission of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol that killed five people, President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Trump famously said he could shoot a man on 5th Avenue in New York City and not be held accountable. Last January, he incited a violent mob to storm the Capitol and attempt to kill members of Congress to overturn the 2020 election results. Today Republicans in the Senate proved Trump’s theory correct. They adamantly refuse to hold Trump’s mob accountable, even when the victims were themselves, their colleagues, their own family members, and the Capitol Hill Police officers dedicated to protecting them. This resistance to a truly bipartisan effort is the strongest argument possible to end the filibuster.”
