Washington, DC — Following votes by the U.S. House of Representatives this week, to pass the Right to Contraception Act and the Respect for Marriage Act, prompted by far-right Supreme Court justices’ clear intent to target precedents protecting our constitutional rights to marriage equality and contraception, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“House Democrats and Republicans who voted this week to protect the right to access contraception and the right to marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples are standing on the right side of American history. Their votes move us one step closer to protecting fundamental freedoms for everyone – to make the most personal decisions about our bodies, our families, our lives, and our futures. Let’s be clear: those who voted against these equal protection laws are the same MAGA Republicans, far-right lawmakers and extremists who continue aiming dangerous attacks at the constitutional rights of every American. Now it’s up to the Senate to enshrine these laws and protect equal justice and the opportunity for all people.”
