Washington, DC—Following today’s announcement by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that he will oppose legislation to create a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Mitch McConnell has clearly calculated that getting the truth about who was behind the January 6 insurrection would be very, very bad for Republicans politically, and so he wants to shut down the creation of a commission. We can’t let this happen. If the origins of the January 6 attack are not probed and exposed, we can be sure that the same or worse will happen again. This is the time for courageous members of Congress to push forward with the creation of the commission and if the Senate filibuster stands in the way, the filibuster must go. The domestic terrorists who planned the attack on our Capitol, and the politicians who incited them, are too dangerous to escape accountability.”
