Washington, DC— In response to the House passage of the Emergency Security Supplemental to Respond to January 6th Appropriations Act, legislation to provide funding for the prosecution of insurrectionists and increase security on U.S. Capitol grounds, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“The House of Representatives took a necessary step today to respond to the violent January 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol, in part by prosecuting those who sought to destroy our democracy. The insurrection will long be remembered as one of the darkest days in modern American history, so we are saddened at the overwhelming partisan opposition to the measure. This bill acknowledges the traumatizing impacts of the attack on members of Congress, congressional staff, visitors, law enforcement agencies and all Americans. We cannot allow a similar event to happen again. We are pleased to see this bill pass in the House, and urge passage in the Senate and for President Biden to sign it expeditiously.”
