WASHINGTON, DC— At the start of Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“This second impeachment trial of Donald Trump is not about politics, it’s about principle. Trump must be held accountable and convicted for inciting a deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol that killed five people. As House impeachment managers lay out in irrefutable terms that Trump called for, organized and inspired that violent mob on January 6, we must remember that his dangerous rhetoric and his encouragement of white supremacists and far-right extremists were an attempt to subvert the will of the voters. Trump sought to destroy our democracy for his own benefit. He betrayed our country and betrayed his oath to the Constitution. The Senate must vote to convict Trump and to reaffirm our core principles so that we never, ever see again in the United States what we saw on January 6: a dangerous demagogue seeking to tear down our entire democracy in an attempt to cling to power.”
