Washington, DC—Following the news of President Biden’s intent to sign an Executive Order creating a Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“We support today’s announcement of a Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court, and believe it should explore every option for ensuring a Court that upholds the rights of all Americans and represents the highest ethical standards. In recent years, the Far Right and wealthy corporate interests have done their best to capture our Supreme Court, putting the rights of millions of Americans at risk. Most recently, we saw deep-pocketed special interests and their Senate allies trashing rules and norms to rush through the confirmation of a successor to the late Justice Ginsburg, in a politically motivated effort to ‘beat the clock’ before the presidential election. We are hopeful that this new commission can provide ideas and solutions that will help restore public trust in the Court, which has been seriously damaged in recent years, and we look forward to working with them to make that happen.”
