Washington, DC—Following the selection of Glenn Youngkin as the Republican nominee in this year’s gubernatorial race in Virginia, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“The people of Virginia will have a clear choice in the gubernatorial election this fall: cast their votes for the candidate who will continue to make progress for working families, or vote for far-right candidate Glenn Youngkin, who will turn back the clock on Virginians’ rights. Youngkin is an extremist who was endorsed by seditionist Senator Ted Cruz, who has embraced voter suppression tactics, and has opposed LGBTQ rights. His candidacy is right out of the Donald Trump playbook: jumping into the race as a multimillionaire political novice with no experience in or commitment to public service.

“People For the American Way has proudly endorsed Jennifer Carroll Foy in the gubernatorial race because of her record working on behalf of Virginians, fighting to protect workers and the environment, expanding Medicaid and passing the Equal Rights Amendment, and championing criminal justice reform. We are confident that Virginians will want a governor who shares their values, like Jennifer Carroll Foy, and will reject Youngkin at the ballot box in November.”
