Washington, DC — Following the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in Brnovich v. Democratic National Committee and its companion case Arizona Republican Party v. Democratic National Committee, which challenged two Arizona policies as racially discriminatory under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Arizona’s anti-voter policies is an affront to our democracy and a failure to protect our freedom to vote. Now Black, Latino, Native American voters who are discriminated against by these policies will not be able to make their voices heard in local, state, and federal elections. Today’s decision is also a betrayal of the principles of the Voting Rights Act and of our democracy. Congress must do everything it can to protect voting rights and prevent states from implementing discriminatory policies like these in the future, including prompt passage of the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
