Washington D.C. – Following today’s filibuster of the Freedom to Vote Act by Senate Republicans, who blocked even opening debate on the bill, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Today we have reached a critical crossroads in the fight to protect voting rights. Senate Republicans’ decision to block even the opening of debate on the Freedom to Vote Act makes it clear beyond any doubt that Democrats and the White House will have to act alone. The Freedom to Vote Act is a common-sense bill that expands access to voting for working people and helps stop billionaires from buying elections. There can be no more excuses for it not to pass, and that means it’s time for the White House and Senate Democrats to do whatever it takes to make that happen – or millions of Americans will be robbed of their right to vote in 2022 and beyond.”
