Washington, DC—As the Senate returns to work this week, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“As we welcome the Senate back for the new year, we expect them to get back to work to confirm fair-minded judges who are committed to upholding the rights of every American. We anticipate that the Senate Judiciary Committee will move promptly on the numerous nominees sent back to the White House that were not confirmed before the holiday break, as well as the nominees announced shortly before the new year. The full Senate must confirm those nominees as soon as possible once the Committee acts. These are quality nominees whose prompt confirmation is essential to ensure fair-minded judges serve on our lower courts.
“Although President Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have fallen behind the pace of confirmations under previous presidents, confirming an additional 28 judges by the end of March will allow Biden to pull ahead and, importantly, continue repairing the harm to our rights and liberties by the previous administration’s nominees.
“Confirming additional quality nominees starts today with floor action on the first of three district court judges on the calendar for whom cloture has been filed. The stakes could not be higher considering the impact that judges have on people’s lives in areas like voting rights, reproductive freedom, and gun safety. It’s time to advance and confirm President Biden’s highly qualified judicial nominees.”
