Washington, D.C.— Following the second day of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Today’s hearing made it absolutely clear that Amy Coney Barrett does not belong on the Supreme Court. It was, in a word, stunning to see Barrett follow Donald Trump’s lead and refuse to state that the president should commit to a peaceful transfer of power. Trump has said he wants Barrett on the Court as soon as possible in case he decides to contest the election. Now Barrett has confirmed that she will not be independent of Trump and that her confirmation would in fact put our democracy at serious risk.  The American people are very, very concerned about this nomination for good reason; Barrett is being planted on the Court to undermine health care and reproductive rights and even to help Donald Trump steal the election. Her confirmation would threaten the health of millions of Americans and the health of our democracy itself. “
