Washington, D.C.— Following the third day of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Throughout these hearings Amy Coney Barrett has repeatedly refused to directly answer questions, but the American people still know exactly where she stands.  She is already on record criticizing Roe and the Affordable Care Act. In fact, Republican Senators openly celebrated the prospect of putting someone with an acknowledged ‘pro-life’ record on the Court. And her evasiveness on other topics today sent very worrying signals, as she refused to acknowledge the constitutionality of Medicare, the existence of racial barriers to voting, that contraception use is protected by a constitutional right to privacy, or that a president cannot pardon himself. There’s just no question that putting Barrett in the seat once held by Justice Ginsburg would create seismic shifts in the lives we live and the rights we have. Senators should vote no on this nomination.”
