Washington, D.C. — In response to devastating news about the passing of civil rights leader, member of Congress and lifelong political activist Rep. John Lewis, President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Our hearts are heavy with the news of Rep. John Lewis’ passing. He was a friend and source of inspiration. His life stands as a reminder to all Americans about the transformative power of our nation’s faith in universal equality and freedom. My hope and prayer is that we remember his sacrifices and his lived testament for all humanity: be bold, be courageous, be hopeful, and never stop stirring up good trouble because together we can make our greatest dreams real. Rest in power, Rep. Lewis.”
