WASHINGTON, D.C.— As Donald Trump continues to call the novel coronavirus the “Chinese Virus” in public and press communications about the pandemic, People For the American Way President Michael Keegan released the following statement:

“The offensive term ‘Chinese Virus’ is clearly Donald Trump’s favorite new racist dog whistle. At a time when a president should be working to unite the country, Trump has predictably fallen back on his divisive strategy of playing to the most extreme elements of his base. His use of racist language in relation to this public health crisis is unacceptable, incites violence, and must be called out repeatedly until it is stopped.”
