WASHINGTON, D.C.—People For the American Way (PFAW) today released the following statement from PFAW Executive Vice President Marge Baker in response to the confirmation of William Barr to be the next Attorney General of the United States.

“The Attorney General of the United States should be committed to ensuring justice, equality, and the rule of law for all. With that in mind, we are deeply disappointed that the GOP-led Senate approved William Barr for the post.

“Congress should make vigorous use of its oversight powers to ensure that Barr’s disturbing views and record on civil and human rights and executive power do not shape similarly troubling policy at the Justice Department.

“With Barr in place, it is also absolutely critical that Congress does everything that it can to protect the Mueller investigation and to ensure that the findings are shared with the public. We noted previously that during his confirmation hearing Barr declined to give concrete assurances that Barr would listen to the advice of career Justice Department officials on whether he should recuse himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation and that Mueller’s findings would be shared with the public. The House and the Senate should take strong action to protect that outcome.”
