WASHINGTON, D.C.— Following tonight’s Democratic presidential primary debate, People For the American Way Executive Vice President for Policy and Program Marge Baker released the following statement:

“Tonight we heard a vision for the role of government that is not only right for the times in which we’re living, but also contrasts sharply with the actions of the current administration. The coronavirus pandemic has shown us how critically important it is to have a government that serves the needs of everyday people first, that is both compassionate and competent in a crisis and that takes steps to strengthen the social safety net when we need it most. The candidates who debated tonight share that commitment. Donald Trump does not. We were also glad to hear the issue of federal courts raised tonight, although we still want to hear more from candidates about the vital role federal courts will play in the success of any future administration’s agenda. Without fair-minded judges on the bench to uphold our rights, neither a Sanders nor a Biden presidency can achieve its goals for the American people.”
