Washington, D.C.— Following today’s opening day of confirmation hearings for Donald Trump’s latest Supreme Court nominee, Amy Coney Barrett, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Senate Democrats kept the focus right where it needed to be at today’s first day of confirmation hearings for Amy Coney Barrett: on the people who will be hurt if Barrett becomes the deciding vote on the Supreme Court to overturn the ten-year-old health care law and its coverage for preexisting conditions. It was truly moving to hear the stories of constituents who desperately need to keep their health coverage, and to see the photos of all those, including children, who will be harmed. Republicans desperately tried to change the subject, but they can’t change the facts: this nomination is an existential threat to health care, and many Americans are terrified.”
