“I accept responsibility, but….” —Attorney General Gonzales at his press conference earlier today

People For the American Way President Ralph G. Neas issued the following statement:

“At his press conference this afternoon, Alberto Gonzales did nothing to instill any confidence that he can fulfill the role of Attorney General. He claimed to accept responsibility, but pled ignorance and passed the buck. By standing behind the politically motivated decision to fire eight U.S. attorneys, the Attorney General underscored the fact that this administration will go to any lengths to protect the president instead of the people. Americans deserve better. We reiterate our call for his resignation.”
