WASHINGTON, D.C.— Following today’s Senate vote to conclude the impeachment trial of Donald Trump without a conviction, PFAW President Michael Keegan released the following statement:

“With this vote not to convict Donald Trump, the Republican-controlled Senate has wholeheartedly and irretrievably embraced the cover-up of Trump’s misdeeds and set a disastrous precedent for our system of checks and balances. Those who voted not to remove Trump from office know full well that Trump’s actions in trying to subvert our democratic elections for his own advantage were wrong. But they lacked the courage and the principles to do anything about it. And because of that, they have put our next election in even more peril. Trump is not chastened or repentant as some Republican senators have suggested; rather, Republicans, with one clear exception, have given him carte blanche to lie, cheat and steal his way to what he hopes will be reelection. Our only choice now is to be hypervigilant in guarding against Trump’s inevitable future abuses — and turn out to vote in November.”
