In response to reports that Donald Trump ordered the firing of Robert Mueller during the summer of 2017, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:

“Whenever you think you can fathom how out of control this president is, another headline comes along to show that we’re only scratching the surface. Ordering the firing of Robert Mueller might be the most explicit move yet to indicate how far Trump is willing to go to obstruct any investigation into his misbehavior during the run-up to the 2016 election and his later efforts to cover it up.

“What’s more disturbing is that Trump’s campaign of character attacks against Robert Mueller, the FBI investigators, and our system of justice are finding a receptive audience not just among his radical base, but among members of Congress. These attacks don’t just undermine efforts to uncover illegal activity by this president and his allies—they undermine our entire democratic system. Republicans in Congress and Trump’s defenders in the media are doing a grave disservice to our country when they put their party and their ideology above their commitment to the rule of law.”
