WASHINGTON, D.C.— With the Supreme Court hearing oral arguments tomorrow in two cases regarding Donald Trump’s attempts to keep his tax and financial records from congressional inquiry, People For the American Way Executive Vice President for Policy and Program Marge Baker released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is not above the law. The pending Supreme Court cases regarding the president’s taxes and personal financial records are about transparency and the ability to hold elected officials accountable. The outcome of these cases could reshape our Constitution’s system of checks and balances, which is why the Court must protect congressional oversight of the executive branch and counter the pattern of Trump judges casting votes to protect him and uphold his dangerous policies. In fact, Trump is even saying that a firm holding his financial records cannot even be subpoenaed in a criminal investigation. The American people have the right to know whether the president is abusing power, concealing illegal activities, or dodging his taxes, especially while millions of people are suffering through a deadly pandemic and the worst economic slump since the Great Depression.”

PFAW court and policy experts wrote blog entries on both the panel and en banc decisions in Trump v. Mazars USAwhich is one of the cases being argued tomorrow.
