Promoting Gender Equity - People For the American Way

Promoting Gender Equity

From countering hostile politics to pushing proactive reforms, promoting gender equity is critical to achieving our vision of a vibrant democratic society that works for all of us. We must strive for equality by standing up for reproductive freedom; safe, welcoming, and equitable schools; workplaces that are committed to equal pay for equal work and to breaking down other forms of discrimination; a society where #MeToo is a thing of the past; and so much more.

All of us means all of us. Promoting gender equity includes promoting equality and recognition for transgender, gender-expansive and all LGBTQ+ people. It also includes standing up and speaking out at the intersections of racial justice, disability justice and justice for other systemically oppressed communities.

What We’re Fighting For

  • Representation in federal, state and local elected offices
  • Reproductive freedom including addressing structural barriers to abortion and birth control access, quality maternal care and parenting supports
  • Equal pay and fair wages including a livable minimum wage for people of color
  • Fair-minded judges who understand how the law affects all Americans
  • Paid family and medical leave provided by the FAMILY Act
  • Survivors’ rights including school and workplace protections against sexual violence and harassment
  • LGBTQ+ rights and other important protections provided by the Equality Act

What We’re Up Against

  • Fair courts: The Right wants to put more anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-choice jurists like Justice Kavanaugh and Justice Gorsuch on the bench at every level to undermine Obergefell v. Hodges and overturn the Roe v. Wade decision.
  • Public policy: Right-wing groups are fighting gender equity reforms and pushing radical legislation at the local, state and federal levels.
  • Economic equality: The Right’s agenda includes opposing essential economic advances like paid family and medical leave, quality child care that’s affordable, a livable minimum wage and equal pay for equal work.
