Statement of Ralph G. Neas, President, People For the American Way

The election of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., as Democratic Leader of the House of Representatives is a milestone for progressive leadership and for women in this country. Throughout her distinguished career, Pelosi has shown herself to be a thoughtful student of government and of issues as well as an accomplished politician. At a challenging time for Democrats, she brings a clear vision of what the party should stand for as well as the practical skills of consensus building and counting votes.

Pelosi is well grounded in the full array of issues the House will need to consider, from the war on terrorism and against Iraq to the bread-and-butter issues of health care and education. People For the American Way looks forward to working with her on strengthening public education, maintaining a woman’s right to choose, protecting the First Amendment, and guarding our constitutional rights and liberties.
