Following passage of the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in the U.S. House today, People For the American Way President Ralph G. Neas had the following statement:

“The House today took a step toward justice for Americans who face discrimination in the workplace – and a step toward undoing the damage done by the new right-wing bloc on the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Every American agrees that workers deserve fair pay for doing their jobs, and shouldn’t be discriminated against on the basis of sex, race, or religion. It shows how far to the right the court has swung that it would deny workers their day in court in a clear case of discrimination – and that it requires an act of Congress to right this wrong.

“We urge swift passage of this bill in the Senate, and we urge the President to sign it immediately. Every American deserves a workplace free of discrimination, and a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. If they don’t get it, they deserve a chance to seek justice.”
